My wife and I watch "The Pallisers" every winter. It's our personal favorite. As soon as New Year's passes, we watch two episodes every Sunday night. We finish the whole miniseries around early-mid April.
It's more of a Victorian soap opera (taking place from Aug. 1860 - Dec. 1885) instead of a dreamy romance like "North & South" and "Pride & Prejudice".
"Captains & the kings" is more of an American miniseries. I suggested it because it offers an intelligent and engaging plot with some very solid acting.
I disliked it - heartily. Keira Knightley was a bad Elizabeth Bennet. Instead of portraying a woman full of playfulness, wit and humor, she acted like a rude, pouty, and bad-tempered young woman. They combined certain scenes, left out others and completely omitted some characters necessary to the story. They had the characters doing things they would never have done in that time period: Elizabeth being rude to her parents, Lady Catherine visiting the family late at night and the family entertaining her in their bedclothes, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet both walking outside in their bedclothes (yea, right, we don't even do that today) and much more. The newest version of Pride and Prejudice was not true to the characters Jane Austen wrote, not true to the era in which it was set, and not true to the manners and civility of the time. Personally, I think they cut the heart out of Jane Austen's story (which was meant to be a comedy of manners and not a straight up love story) and, instead, made a story with modern manners and sensibilities, named the characters the names Jane Austen gave them then slapped Jane Austen's novel's name on it and tried to make the audience believe it really WAS an accurate adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. It might be reasonably enjoyable if they didn't try to pass it off as Jane Austen's story, but for those of us who absolutely adore Jane Austen and her novels this adaptation did not meet the requirements. But other than that, it was okay. :) BTW: If you want a really good adaptation of the novel, watch either the 1980 BBC version starring Elizabeth Garvie and/or the 1995 A&E version starring Colin Firth.
Love this question. Try "Mansfield Park"...it's quite satisfying. Although, if you want unrequited love, check "The Remains of the Day"...devastatingly beautiful.
