Engineers get MBA degrees because they get promoted or want to be promoted into management, and while they may be great engineers, they may not be very good at management. The MBA was created to help engineers and scientists learn how to manage.
The MBA, or Master in Business Administration is a general business degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, management, statistics, economics, law, strategy, policy, and other courses. Many MBA programs offer concentrations in these and many other fields, but that amounts to only 2-3 courses in your chosen field in the second year of study. Many students avoid a concentration and take a variety of elective subjects to gain a broader background.
The MBA differs from an MS degree in that the MS is for a different academic discipline. You can earn an MBA which is a masters degree or an MS in finance, or MS in engineering, or MS in psychology. They are all masters degrees. there is another difference. Admission to an MS program typically requires an undergraduate degree in the field of study or a related field. A finance major does not get accepted into an MS in astronomy, and a biology major does not get accepted into an MS in accounting.
On the other hand, MBA programs accept students with a bachelor’s degree in any undergraduate field. They prefer students who do not have a business major because they give you the business training but they cannot provide the broad background that managers should have. The best majors are in the sciences, technology, engineering, or math, but other majors are also suitable. Any field of endeavor can use good management. The reason for avoiding a business undergraduate degree is that it results in too much duplication with the MBA and leaves you with a narrow focus. On the other hand, companies hiring MBA graduates are looking for those who earned the MBA but can also communicate with the people that they have to manage as they advance in their jobs.
An MS program may accept students who just received their first degree. MBA programs prefer students with 2-4 years work experience after the first degree. Some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. But in those programs you don't get the benefit of learning from other students who have work experience. A lot of valuable learning takes place through class interaction. Also when you graduate your job offers will be about the same as a business undergraduate gets because you have no work experience, and you've been two years out of your undergraduate field so it is hard to get work in that area. You get a lot more value from a graduate degree if you have a few years of work experience before you start it.
MBA is helpful for engineers that want to become engineering or operations or supply chain managers or directors. It is the best way for an engineer to make over $100,000. You can do your MBA in marketing, accounting, or other business related field.
However, an MBA is not required to become an engineering manager or director. It just speeds up the process. Some people get M.E. in Systems Engineering or M.S. in Engineering Management or M.S. in Project Management. This also helps speed up your career by getting you into management positions sooner with less experience.
