The immediate effect is bonding with people who have the same interests, goals and perhaps values that you have.
Also, after college your fraternity/sorority connections may help you in business, networking and just sustaining a kindred relationship with people (sorors, brothers) who went thru the ordeal of pledging the fraternity/sorority as you did.
I joined a sorority because it was 'something' to do at the college I went to which was in the sticks. The communal nature of the sorority was helpful as it allowed for more socialization (ie. parties, get togethers, etc.)
You will get out of joining a frat or sorority what you want from it, knowing beforehand the benefits that joining will allot you.
Investigate. Notice which people you admire (intelllectually and socially) and what fraternity or sorority they belong to.
It's like picking (numerous) friends with whom you will have a broader allegiance (a civilized 'gang' if you will).
so you can buy your friends, learn how to drink....
I was wrong.... no really, here is why:
Greek women and men are involved in a multitude of campus activities and organizations. Greeks are most often the most visible and enthusiastic supporter for all on-campus events.
Fraternity and sorority members prove to have a strong commitment to themselves and to their letters. They also are among the most respected on campus as well as having one of the highest percentages of loyal alumni
All Greek life participates in community service
Greek members can be granted internships, job assistance, advice and exposure thanks to the Greek alumni!
In college it's a great way to make a lot of friends rather quickly and fill your social calender. If you're an officer it looks good on your resume. Also, after college it's good for networking.
You get to rent your friends - people to hang out with without having to put forth the effort of building a true friendship. As long as you pay your dues every semester.
you get to be an alcholic and its no big deal and you get to put that on your job resume that you helped did "volunteer work"...lol. Basically it's for people that have trouble making friends and really have a need to "belong" to something.
