The Magna Charta ("Great Charter") was an agreement between King John and his Barons that established the right of trail by jury for freemen and those of higher rank. It also established a number of other "rights" which accrued to the Barons in question. Over time, those rights have gradually been applied to the entire population, in some countries.
As such, it was the basis of much of Common Law, which applies in Britain, most of it's former dependencies, and the United States.
It brought about the creation of constitutional law and common law. It helped create such laws as Habeas Corpus( unlawful imprisonment). It also was the basis for the creation of the U.S. Constitution and the U.S. Bill of Rights.
