i am in college and need to get active...we have a gym at the recreation center by my apartment but im not sure where to start. i know that i have to change my diet ive got that down but i need to start working out.

There should be some trainers at the recreation center so ask them where to start and they will be very glad to help you.
Start eating a bit healthier first, depending on what u want, exercise a bit each day, you could walk a bit more or just do something productive, ask your doctor, they might have some tips, that's what I did, and so far I lost 2 pounds
First start jogging and then the gym, that with the diet, you will get fit quick, maybe play football with your friends.
start by warming up, go for a jog and stretch so you an get your system running.
then start working out and then warm down and stretch properly so you wont have strained muscles in the morning. repeat this cycle everytime.warming up and down take 20 min.
