My partner and I have been together for 19 years. We live in Illinois which now recognizes domestic unions. What are the legal benefits to being married?
Well in heterosexual marriages the woman gets to take half of everything a man has plus sometimes vaginamony. I don't know why homosexuals have been fighting so hard for marriage, now you get to be miserable and see what the outdated "institution" does to couples. I want marriage to be illegal for all parties.
I've been married almost 18 years and I haven't noticed any.
If either of you have an employer that provides benefits for spouses, you could enjoy some savings on health insurance and such, other than that there's not much. In the event of a death, the spouse gets ownership of the property of the deceased, but you can do that with a $25 will package.
Unfortunately, same sex marriages aren't recognized as married by Federal law, only state law and therefore still don't have the same tax benefits as straight couples do. It's ignorant but true.
I hope in the near future federal law will recognize same sex marriages.
Well, when you are married and get divorced, your can get half of your crap. Legally speaking of course. You can also rack up a few domestic abuse charges before the courts legally intervene and someone gets locked up. You can be legally responsible for your spouse's debts and bad financial decisions. Ahh. The list goes on and on.

The big three are as follows; There are no pension benefits with same sex marriages.
There are no health benefits and finally, society doesn't fully recognize same sex domestic unions
as being legitimate, valid. Regardless of which state(s) try to "recognize" the union as being something, society doesn't accept it.
