I read this years ago when I was about ten, and loved it unconditionally. I've read it many times since then, yet the impact has never faded. Although the first part 'The Sword in the Stone' is not as enjoyable, the whole book is wonderful.
My question is, has anyone else ever felt incredibly saddened by the book? To the point of almost crying over the eventual fates of Lancelot and Arthur and Guinevere?
I've never cried over a book or film in my life with 3 exceptions- this book, King Rat (James Clavell) and the film Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
Update:In reply to I <3 u Twilight is poorly written, badly thought out trashy fiction, which lies on romance to sell itself to teenagers. I am perfectly justified in disliking it. Try actually reading 'The Once and Future King'

Yes, The Once and Future King is a fantastic series of books. It becomes increasingly dark as the books go by. The Sword in the Stone is quite light in nature. The second book, The Queen of Air and Darkness/The Witch in the Wood, has it moments of lightness, but by the time you get to Candle in the Wind, it is a morbid story of the doom of Camelot, torn asunder by the people who made it.
A truly fantastic story, and one we can learn a lot from. T.H.White treats his characters as real people, not the idealised versions we see in Tennyson's poetry, or in Hollywood films. They are real people, with real faults.
Twilight is crap just to let you know. Read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. The first one is Interview With The Vampire. I love the Vampire Chronicles so much and I could not imagine Literature without them.
