`i don't think it is because you can grow valuable plants that can be sold in the market for a lot of money. why do people say this? how do people not know that goods can be grown on trees? i just don't get it.

Yes its impossible for money to grow on trees. The phrase is just a way of saying "You have to earn money yourselves!" Its proven by science that money can't grow on trees. I know its confusing. But I guess people mean it literally. Hope you think this answer's good. 8D
IT's just a saying. I think it's like literal ecause whenver I asked certain questions about getting money from my parents they'd say money doesn't grow on trees and I think they were being quite literal. My parents are smart and if I asked them if they could grow fruit etc. to sell and get money they'd say yes but then they'd be like, "we don't have a tree so go get a job". Bahaha I think for me it is literal. But for most people it means that money does not just come easily and you have to work for it. That's the tue definition.
money is not so easy to come by. it takes effort. when you grow the goods, you must market and sell them to get the money. like plant a toaster and get a toaster. plant a coin and get a tree full of coins. i wish.
its ironic becuz technically it does. paper DOES grow on treesand money is paper. but they mean like its not easy, u cant just pluck it off a branch so its ironic tht people say that.
