Is being a car sales person good for anybody with good customer service?
I want to sale cars, i know a little about cars but i have good customer service, the greet part. Is this job good for me? How long will it take for me to get used to the job?
i can tell you from experience, a couple years ago i was hired by Radioshack even though i had no extensive electronic experience but i was hired based on my former supermarket position because they knew that that supermarket makes customer service their number one priority, lol eventually i quit, more interested in cars, so having great customer service can only help your situation, everything else, selling techniques youll learn
Wow! Talk about misinformation and stereotypes! I've been selling Toyota cars and trucks for the last 10 years and have never had to "cheat" anybody to sell them a car.
Product knowledge is very important but most important is relating to to customers wants and needs when looking for a vehicle. I have a loyal following as I provide my customers with the most exceptional customer service and after the sale service. Most of my monthly sales are from repeat and referrals. One of my regulars said this to me one time: "The reason I come back to you every time is you show me all the features and benefits of my car and you are always available to answer any questions I might have about my car. And you are always fair with me. I trust you."
Anyway, to answer your question, selling cars is not for everyone. The hours are long and there is a lot of down time. Most people buy cars on the weekends so the weekdays can be rather long and boring. Most people do very well the first couple of months they are in the business as most friends and family come to buy from you to get you started. Once that dries up then reality hits. You have to wait on customers to pull up on the lot or prospect for your own customers. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of fun if you like to help people and are personable and not a jerk. Although I've seen quite a few jerks make a good living out of it.
I would advice you to try it for a couple of months and go from there. It can be a very good living or it can be the worst job you've ever had.
Also, before you apply go to your favorite dealership and just hang out for a while pretending your car is in service. Take a look around the showroom and see what everyone is doing. Also ask yourself if that would be a place you'd like to work at and if possible just make small talk with one of the sales persons. They will tell it to you like it is. Good luck.
You know I love cars and know a great deal more than most sales men so I was considering doing it for a living. While working at a popular restaurant, I asked a friend who sold cars if he could get me job. He told me that the way I interact with the customers at the restaurant was not good for selling cars. I got too attached and personal with people that I would not make money because I would feel bad about doing some of the things I would be forced to do. So If you are a good customer service worker, I would say you would not like it.
i would wait to get into selling cars. the economy is bad and no one is really buying anything. with the high gas prices though if you still choose to sell cars, i would go to a Honda dealership. their cars get really good gas mileage and that is what people are looking for. on the other side, car salesmen often cheat people just so they can make money. everything is commission. if you don't sell any cars, you don't make any money. i would suggest learning a bit more about cars more so of the ones you want to sell. no one will buy anything from someone who knows nothing about it.

Car salesman is about SELLING. They often cheat the customers to do it.
So if you are OK with that, go for it.
