Once two people freely admit that they like each other it is very hard to be "just friends." Just like you were in a relationship and your significant other said you two should stop kissing. It would be very hard to stop if you were already kissed in the past. And it would feel awkward. Don't play games tell your friend how you feel. There is no reason to feel awkward around a friend.
