My friend claims that if he begins drinking at 6 in the evening and has just enough to get him drunk (a few shots of vodka and some beer) and if he is drinking after having eaten rather than on an empty stomach that by the time he has to go home (about 10 in the evening) he will have sobered up. Is he right?

Everybody responds differently to alcohol, and to different kinds of alcohol. He very well may be in the right for himself, but the same plan may end over the toilet for someone else.
Regardless, it's always a good idea to have something in your stomach if you're drinking, and it can dramatically alter how quickly and/or how strongly alcohol affects your body. Find your own limits over time, carefully, and make sure to listen to your body- it will tell you when is too much.
Yeah four drinks in 4 hours with a full belly of food, that sounds about right...
I doubt it.
