Depends on some factors such as bit rate & length. My iPod has 30GB total capacity & I have all my songs at 160kbps with a sample rate of 44100kbps. Over 1000 songs I believe its 1206 not sure, but that only takes up 11GB.
So a 500GB HD...well:
10GB = 1000 songs
1GB = 1000/10
500GB = 100 * 500 = 50 000 songs.
Thats just an estimate. Maybe more, maybe less, but again it depends on the factors I described above.
NB
a 320kbps song eg. would take up 13.2MB but a 160kbps song would take 1/2 the amount ~ 6.5MB
A 500GB will hold 25000 songs, 1.8 million Pictures Or 1500 Full length Movies. so you should probably get a 250 and yes most external hardrive can hook up to any computer but to be safe look at the system requirements on the back of the box...
witth 500gb you can hold any song amount, you will never run out of room, a typical song is 2-5mb, 512mb is a half a Gig, do the math.... thats alot of songs
well lets see i had about 1000 songs max that my 4GB held. so do that math and...ALOT ha ha no, really probably like around 125000 but thats just and average. and i don't think you have that much songs

Depends on the length of the songs and the bitrate used to encode them.
But figuring 4 MB per song (for an approximately 4 minute song), divide that into the formatted space on the drive.

500gb Hard Drive
1 GB=250 songs
so 500 GB=125000

500 GB = 500 x 1024 MB = 512,000 MB
1 song aprrox = 4 MB
So, 500 GB can hold = 512,000 / 4 = 128,000 songs
1 CD = 600 MB
You can have 512,000 / 600 = 853 CDs (in mp3 format)
in audio CD, maybe around 23 songs,
So, you can have 128,000 / 23 = 5,565 audio CDs

I have 6000 songs on my computer, which only take up 15GB, so you should be good :)
