4gb is fine for just pictures. It is better to have lots of 4gb cards instead of a few 16gb or 32gb cards. That way, your data is spread out over multiple cards and if a card corrupts you do not lose anything. remember to upload pictures after every day of shooting, then format the card in the camera.

No it can't - that is why it endlessly warns that there is no memory card in it!!
Turn off the option in the menus that allows camera operation without card.
If the t3i is typical of Canon products, I own two Canon dslr cameras, the unit won't even turn on without a memory card.

Look around in the menus with your memory card in and you'll find the option to transfer the pictures from the internal memory to the memory card.
