If you know the right people definitely. I know for a fact that one of the animal trainers at my local zoo has a degree in psychology and I have a friend earning a degree in psychology currently that plans to train horses. I'd suggest volunteering at your local zoo or aquarium to get a start in getting to know people or getting to know people in the field you want to get into in the near future.

I looked at specialising in animal psychology, however no one out there does this as a course or modules. So it's more a case of training unofficially as there is no university that does official training.

I opted to go into a different area of psychology in the end, so can't give much advice on how to go about this.

You don't have to have a degree in psychology. What do you want to do with animals? You didn't say? Do you want to train them, pet sit, care for sick animals? The degree or training you get will depend on what you plan to do with the animals.

Most of the people who work at the Yerkes Primate Research Center are psychologists.
