Im a freshman in my high school marching band and I'm first chair. Everyone was shocked. My section leader is 3rd chair, and a junior. She is a good marcher, but not a good musician. I am the opposite; I am an excellent musician, but an OK marcher. During music rehearsals, all she knows how to do is make us repeat sections over and over. Also, she never teaches us how to improve our playing. Any advice has come from me. I know i can be an excellent leader, but do you think my director will pick a sophmore over a senior next year?

It really depends, I was a drum major for 2 years and I had a big role in picking my section leaders. If you saw things that your section leader could have done better focus on doing that for yourself. You'll have to be a good marcher to be section leader although that doesn't mean you won't get it if you aren't amazing. It's not always the best musician who gets it. All in all you have to strive to be the best you can at everything involved in marching band while still staying humble and ALWAYS respect your section leader. Be outgoing and try to overcome the freshmen skittishness.
Since the marching season should have just started you should ask for help marching and make sure your talking with upperclassmen about being a section leader.
Good luck
You can never know! Some directors choose solely based on seniority, but others choose based on talent. If I were you, I'd approach my director, and tell him/her that you're interested in taking on more of a leadership role. Ask how you can help. As a freshman, take almost anything you can get. You'll come across as a team player and having interest in the band.
properly you are able to continually run the scales, uninteresting even with the undeniable fact that it extremely improves fingering and tone. you will discover relaxing songs to play like loopy prepare or some thing (that music is relatively relaxing on sax, basically sayin) which you would be able to play as slightly. discover some thing this is written for a sax quintet and make extra copies if mandatory. that way it won't sound strange by way of fact something of the band basically isn't fiddling with you. i desire this helps and good success!
If you are in a larger band they may let you both. If only to get the music ability and the marching ability across.
