Space-time is a 4D representation of events taking place in 3D space. This concept is perfectly valid, but it does not invalidate the existence of 3D space. Mass, energy, time and velocity take on new meanings in space-time, but the old meanings remain valid. I prefer to express my own ideas in the old familiar terms.

Matter consists of waves which propagate in tight circles within the fabric of space, i.e., the ether. Space is made up of matter on a much finer scale than the matter of our universe.

Gravity distorts space-time, but not 3D space. This distortion is a direct result of the redefinition of space by saying that light follows straight lines in space-time, whereas we all know it follows curved paths in 3D space. If you are in an intense gravity field, you experience the distortion of 4D space-time as gravity. That is how you know the space-time around you is distorted.

If the fabric of space flows, it does so on a time scale so slow that we could not perceive the flow, even if we observed it with today's technology for the entire duration of human existence.

The ether is a medium for matter waves. The interaction between waves and their medium is a complex fractal dance, involving expansion of space and reversal of time as explained below.

In my own Fractal Foam Model of Universes, everything in our universe consists of ethereal pressure waves and ethereal shear waves. Due to exchange of momentum between pressure waves and shear waves, pairs of shear waves either attract or repel one another, depending on their relative wave length, phase, polarity and position. Certain classes of shear-wave pairs attract strongly enough to be locked in orbit around one another, which converts their energy to rest mass. Each type of fundamental particle is a strange attractor in the chaotic mix of shear waves and pressure waves.

The fundamental particles accumulate into larger-scale strange attractors, such as atoms, planets, galaxies and the cosmic foam (voids surrounded by walls of galaxies). The cosmic foam of our universe is the ether foam of a super-universe, and the ether foam of our universe is the cosmic foam of a sub-universe. If the median size ether-foam bubble is a Planck length across, then an electron is perhaps a trillion bubbles across, and each cubic meter of our ether consists of literally googols of sub-universe galaxies.

Expansion of space stretches the bubble walls of the cosmic foam until, one by one, they pop (taking perhaps a billion years). When a bubble wall pops, pressure waves radiate in the next larger scale universe. The pressure waves from sub-universe cosmic-foam bubbles popping is the dark energy which drives everything in our universe.

So matter consists of waves in a medium of smaller scale matter, which consists of waves in a medium of still smaller scale matter, ... ad infinitum. As for time reversal, the arrow of time reverses from one scale-wise universe to the next. I explain why at the links below.

the big bang theory says that the universe is allways expanding. some people say space is infininte other, i dont know what they say. but if the univers is ifinite than it must have all ways been infinite unless it is infinitly growing but that would still suggest that there is a end to the universe and i do no think there is an end to the universe. this one person put it something like this( if you have an infinte number line consisting of all even numbers, and a number line consisting of all numbers, which number line has more numbers, the answer is they both have the same amount of numbers) this helps explaiin the idea that the universe is infinite but still expanding. but i do believe that there was a beging to time and before that obviosly there was no time, so you cant say what was happening three hours before time because it did not exist. i have came up with my own idea of way there is time, matter and stuff. it is a liitle weird but i have actualy used the asian ying yang for reason. the ying yang suggest that every thing has an opposite, so you can not have one thing with out the other, for example there could be no such thing as skinny people if there werent fat people. so i have decided that the universe came into existence through the fact that there can not be nothing with out something. and this somethng became the universe. this might not answer your question but i still felt that i should put it out there.
