It's not grilled cheese- it's a fried cheese sandwich.
Why do you call it grilled cheese, but call a fried egg what it is?
Update:Grilled is when you put it under or over a naked flame or heat source.

grilled cheeses used to be grilled but now they just pan fry them. the name probably just stuck with it because pan fried cheese sandwich doesn't sounds as good as a grilled cheese...and its a lot more to write. a fried egg probably got its name because you kind of cook it like you are frying it even though you aren't REALLY frying an egg. and i'm not saying that you throw it in a fryer to cook a fried egg. i mean you put oil on a skillet or whatever and that's how some things are fried. so .... you get a fried egg! :) i hope this helps!
I think the grilled cheese started out as being 'grilled' but evolved into a more simpler and conventional way of preparation. I guess the label just stuck.
Grilled is just a common name for a melted cheese sandwich. Sort of like Kleenex is a common term of any brand of tissues and Q-tips for any brand of cotton swabs.
it sounds kinda like a chicken on a raft or toad in a hole, but I don;t really think that's what you mean. It's just a fried egg sandwich I would guess.
skillet grillin! If it bothers you that much, get a panini press to make your sandwiches :P
