In the west, LA Lakers are definitely the best team (if not the entire league). This team has a mix of offense and defense, with a superstar like Kobe surrounded by role players like Gasol and Buyum, they can only go up. This team is built for the long haul and can easily be in the hunt for the next 5 years. The negatives with the team is the inconsistency and how much motivation does Kobe have? They are probably a true point guard away of developing something really special.
SA Spurs are also a great team but age has caught up with them. With all those 50+ win seasons, they haven't really drafted anyone that can give them impact. They have some budget but not enough to land someone who can help them out. Tim Duncan, Parker and Ginoboli help make the team scary but they are a lot of holes in the armor. I think they have to honestly look at themselves and ask if they want now or later, if they answer that then this team can address their needs and again become a powerhouse but time is of an essence.
In the East, it is a two head beast with a third developing. Boston Celtics have had the taste of championship and still have a lot to prove. Their defense is scary and can be brought on at anytime, which is scary. Of course, they have some holes also in that armor but they are built for right now and will take advantage of the situation and continue to be a Juggernaut.
Cleveland Cavs have a great man, King James, and have some role players around him but they are only role players. They are one superstar away from being special. They are young and hungry but don't have that other go-to person. James is a great and at times seems like he can do everything but during the playoffs, his strength can be the Cavs weakness. They need a big man who can add scoring and defense, to help out James. They are winning, so draft may not help them. Unless they can make a draft day trade that can rock the NBA. For instance, if they can muster the money to keep LeBron and work out a trade to pick up the 1st pick for 2009 (Blake Griffin), then they become a dangerous team. Other than that scenero, they must rely on their work horse LeBron.
The third coming out is the Orlando Magic, this team has youth and size but no real true superstar. Before people yell at me saying Dwight Howard is a superstar, he is and he isn't. He is big and can do a lot of things but he also is a liability. The team also lives by the three, which if you live by the sword you can die by the sword just as easily. They need to have a inside-outside game, where there is more stability. If they can pick up a true point guard and slashing shooting guard, they can be dangerous, and quickly.
lakers are playing good D lately and kobe is passing there on top. caviliers are next lebrons playing good and hes got better players around him like mo williams and such. next the celtics who arent playing as good as they should be, they need a trade. get someone like marbury hes just rotting in new york. last spurs who just arent playing lke the spurs im used to
personally I don't "like" any of these teams (Pistons til the day I die)...
...but in terms of how good they are, i'd rank them...
Lakers, Celtics, Cavs, Spurs.
Lakers are just sick with Bynum now...Celtics are so dominant and deep on the bench...Cavs are ridiculous, but it's all LBJ, that ain't no "team"...and the Spurs shouldn't even be compared to these other three...I would've put the Magic in there...
The Lakers would be a better team without Bryant . He acts like is the greatest he is a nobody with very little talent. Put Obama on the team to replace him.

So I guess my rankings would be as the following:
LA Lakers
Boston Celtics
Cleveland Cavs
San Antonio Spurs
Orlando Magic
Celtics (Rondo and Leon Powe are the secret weapons, Big Baby is the man)
Magic lol (Jameer Nelson gonna lead the league in assists for the next 20 years)
Lakers (Kobe and Gasol limit the weaknesses but they lost last year cus of their bad bench)
Cavs (they are the best now but they dont have enough much of a burst of energy of the bench except maybe Gibson)
Spurs (too old to win it all)
Celtics
Lakers
Cavs
Spurs
