Polar makes heart rate monitors. Some have a "calorie" function that gives you a rough estimate calculated from heart rate and data you put in. It can't and doesn't actually measure calories burned. For the calculation, it uses data taken on athletes with very different equipment in very different circumstances. Everyone's heart rate curve is different, as is oxygen carrying capacity, blood flow per beat, etc., etc.
The calorie function is little more than a marketing gimmick.
That said, heart rate monitors are a useful training tool if you put in a few weeks/months with it to figure out what the numbers mean to you. As with the calorie number, generic zones and heart rate curves are all but worthless.
It calculates your heart rate, and it tells you exactly how many calories you burned (: You put in your height and weight and push start or whatever and it tells you what youve burned! its so cool(: its on my Christmas list(: haha
