I just saw Milk. I agree with people being people and agree with Gay rights. So, take your fight elsewhere about life.
My question is in understanding the character and the reality of Dan White. Was he one of those men who is secretly a gay wannabe and hating them, I think it is called homophobic like the 9/11 terrorists. Or, was he really believing that he was protecting his city be removing an evil? It is still confusing after all the news, stories and movie.
PS. Once my granddaughter explained what the Advocate was/is, I had to watch it again and laugh through the movie and my favorit line was, 'If you want real political power; try telling the truth!'

I honestly thought that Dan White murdered Harvey Milk more out of jealousy and an out of control ego.
He watched Harvey accomplish things that he couldn't seem to get done for his own district. Harvey was a minority and yet he was still able to unite people of so many backgrounds, and then to get the support of his colleagues and have them voting favorably for the issues that Harvey held dearly. And here was Dan White, not getting anything done, he felt as though Harvey Milk had made him look like a fool, in the movie he even tells Harvey you can't keep disgracing me.
I know in the one scene Harvey Milk speculated that Dan White was a closeted gay man, I have never seen anything that could confirm this as the truth.
I will say as I watched the movie I got the sense that Dan White looked at his life in these terms:
I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, I married a pretty woman, we have a family, I have a career that could be, not only fulfilling but also quite high profile. I'm doing everything that is supposed to add up to success, and I'm still failing.......then here comes a gay guy, with a spotty background, no real experience as a politician, and he is succeeding in everything he touches. He is loved and admired by even the most unlikely of people.
This is my take on the situation. Sorry this was so long.

Dan White Milk
The only thing we know about Dan White was that he was angry he didn't get the position in office that he wanted, and by killing the mayor and Milk, he was trying to justify it. We get the suspicious hint from Milk throughout the movie, but we do not know for sure if he was homophobic. He could have been a closeted gay who hated being gay, but we'll never hear that from Dan White himself now, will we?
If a human, or otherwise, has every intention of taking your life from you, and in fighting to Maintain your life you take theirs, it is justified that you were protecting your rights, while it would be shown the other human was breaking the law. By all means, however, you do have the right to NOT fight back, and let someone kill you. Then, you will have saved a life. Not yours, though. .
We'll never know, unless a secret diary is found where he confesses any attraction towards men, which is highly unlikely. And frankly, I don't really care to find out. The guy was cuckoo, that's all I know.
