Yeah, you and all the other animal-lovers out there. It takes a lot more than loving animals to be a good vet.
There are so few veterinary schools in the US that it is harder to get into one than it is to get into a medical school. Some schools will not accept out-of-state students.
If you have a weak stomach, any sort of medicine isn't for you. Blood, vomit, gooey secretions, dead tissue, maggots, worms, pus, cancer, and excrement are common.
Vets clean out dogs' anal glands, which smells WAAY worse than any excrement you'd ever encounter. Not exactly for the faint of stomach.
Vet school requires dissection of all kinds of animals, and the chemicals used are pretty nasty. It also requires the observation of, and participation in, all kinds of surgeries. Once you smell cancer and dead tissue associated with it, you'll really gag.
Injuries must be taken care of, and they can be horrific. Trauma isn't pretty--sewing up gashes and treating broken bones that stick through the skin may not be your cup of tea.
Really, though, dealing with the humans is the hardest part. People tend to be really strange (and super demanding) about their animals.
See if you can volunterer at a vet hospital. You'll start out cleaning kennels, but it will give you a dose of reality.
You may be better off as a vet tech, although they face the same thing as vets do.
Maybe being a dog groomer would fill the bill.
a weak stomach refferring to wat exactly?
some vets dont have to see graphic brutality and cruelty to animals
like a local vetenarian
but if you're talking about the vets in large animal hospitals and cities
thats where you would find alot of unpleasent injuries
so ummm....back to you, well if you love animals its a great job and makes yourself feel helpful. but alot of things can go wrong and if you can't handle the stress of losing a patient then i dont think it would be wise
