I am an architecture student right now...I finished my 3rd year of classes, and there were a couple of architects that came to me and told me that one thing I need to learn is how to smooze the client...he told me that I should take them out to a fancy dinner, and just talk and scribble an idea on a napkin for later...he also recommended that I take up golfing. I thought maybe I could get into yachting/sailing...Are there any other idea's I can do?

Yes, first keep current on what issues are important to people in your area. Start hanging out with the right crowds it doesn't have to be every day or night, but lets say your clients are real artsy people...Hit some openings of shows .Where do they lunch etc, make yourself feel like one of them . I think the golfing and yachting are good but rather pricey for a student . But make their coffee house your coffee house.
Then when you see them out you will be remembered as that new and upcoming architect and instead of soliciting them they may in fact solicit you . Good Luck
How about having some good designs to show them?
