I am so sorry you have this. I had this really bad about a year ago, now I have chronic fatigue (ironic?!). So sleeping is obviously not a problem for me anymore. I did find a few tips that helped me get through my insomnia, so I hope these can help you too!
- Avoid your room completely until you sleep, this will make your brain see the link between bed and sleep.
- when you wake up in the morning, don't lie around in your bed. As hard as it is, get out of bed and get ready.
- I found that changing my bed covers was very tiring for me, so I would have a hot bath, change my bed and it definitely made me a lot more relaxed and tired for bed.
- try drinking hot soothing drinks throughout the day.
- avoid anything with caffeine.
- even though you may be sleep deprived and tired, do some exercise to make your body tired.
- one last point that's quite strange but extremely helpful is this last one..
Make sure to tell people you are tired! Throughout the day tell people, maybe once every 2 hours you are tired. Then at about 6pm make sure to tell someone hourly how tired you feel. And make sure you believe this!! Make sure you think this in your brain every 30 minutes and eventually, you will actually feel tired!
One more tip is to keep your eyes closed when you wake up in the night.. You will fall asleep faster.
You don't say whether this has been a recent thing, or something you've dealt with for a long time. It's possible that it will go away on it's own, if you become sufficiently relaxed and reasonably content with your life in general. When I can't sleep, there's usually some part of my mind that I can't shut down because I've got something on my mind, troubling me. Sometimes I get overwhelmed about something personal, and I've gotten my poor little feelings stepped on. Usually it's something which action is required, so that I can rest easy again. So, most of the time, I try to look at the problem, and ask myself what steps I can take to lighten the load. And sometimes doing the right thing isn't easy. But it's usually necessary to get rid of the unease I'm experiencing. This may not be the case at all with you. I don't know anything about clinical insomnia, just my own experience. I hope you find some relief. Take care.
