Well, if the lump is hard and not say, tissue that moves around with the movement of your breast like glands or fat for example, yes, you need to have it checked out, but no, it doesn't automatically mean cancer...however you MUST have it checked out if it does feel suspicious compared to the rest of the tissue in your breast...which I assume it does since you're asking the question at all. The earlier such things are treated the better, cancerous or no.
So go to your doctor or obgyn. They may do an ultrasound, a mammagram, and a biopsy. I had all of those when I had a lump. I was 15, and it was non-cancerous. They didn't truly have to remove it but decided they wanted to anyway. Just make sure you go to highly praised doctor for such a surgery as my first one did not even remove it and left a huge scar...the second doctor I went to said she could have just made a pin hole scar and she DID remove it. So be careful, but DO get it checked out.
You should definitely get it checked by the doctor but there are loads of other things it could be besides cancer, my sister freaked out for weeks before seeing the doctor about a similar lump which turned out to be a cyst or something.
you won't be sure until you see the doctor. have you been getting breast exams regularly? most breast lumps are benign(non cancerous) but still go seek medical evaluation..good luck
It could be a cyst or a pocket of fat that is tender. Although it could be many things I would advise you to see a doctor. Getting screened is the best way to avoid or treat anything early. Good luck.
