Bad water pump seal will not cause coolant to mix with oil. It will cause coolant to leak out around the seal itself. It's pretty possible the head gasket went bad or maybe even the intake manifold gasket (if the manifold is a wet-type which means coolant flows through it as opposed to a dry-type where it doesn't).
