While for the most part a Witness' choice of entertainment is their own choice, we do try to avoid ghost or demonic movies and media of excessive violence.
Of course a demon most likely won't enter your house just because you played a Zelda game that had a little bit of magic or by watching 24. Still, it is good to keep it in mind.
Absolutely and God's view of the occult is very clear.
"At 1 Corinthians 10:20, the apostle Paul warned Christians: “I do not want you to become sharers with the demons.” Just who are the demons, and why is it so dangerous to get involved with them? Simply put, the demons are former angels, who have chosen to follow Satan the Devil. Satan means “Resister” and Devil means “Slanderer.” According to the Bible, this former angelic son of God made himself a resister and a slanderer by choosing to rebel against God. In time, he enticed other angels to join him in his rebellious course. These allies thus became demons.—Genesis 3:1-15; 6:1-4; Jude 6.
Jesus called Satan “the ruler of this world.” (John 12:31) Satan and his demons have “great anger” over their impending destruction. (Revelation 12:9-12) Not surprisingly, those who have become involved with the demons have found them to be vicious. One woman in Suriname who grew up in a family that practiced spiritism saw firsthand how the demons “enjoy torturing their unwilling victims.”* Getting involved with these cruel spirit creatures in any way is thus extremely dangerous!
For this reason, God commanded his ancient people, the Israelites, to avoid all occult practices. “Everybody doing these things is something detestable to Jehovah,” warns Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Christians were likewise warned that “those practicing spiritism” would meet destruction at God’s hand. (Revelation 21:8) Even dabbling in the occult is condemned by God. “Quit touching the unclean thing,” commands the Bible.—2 Corinthians 6:17."
Watching the crowds that come out of a movie complex after spending 2 to 3 hours in movies that feature those subjects, do you ever see a spirit of joy, happiness, love in their faces? Often they look emotionally drained, shaky, especially after the likes of the "Saw" series.
Now, if that happens to people who have shared in those movies in a theater, would you expect that the same movie in the middle of your living room not have the same results? You are entertaining yourself with vile corruption, and that destroys the fruit of the holy spirit within you. With that destruction, what has replaced it? Memories of the hours of horror that you just watched.
Do that mean a "demon" will have moved in? Not necessary. The desired effect of you watching that movie, to tear at your faith and love for goodness has been achieved. And continued watching of that type of material will continue to degrade your relationship with Jehovah God.
(Galatians 5:22, 23) 22 On the other hand, the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 mildness, self-control. . . .
Growing up in an extremely superstitious country, there are somethings that really science cannot explain. Doing anything to attract demons will be like waving a big welcome sign. Lets leave all the weird things where they are.
Yes. Provided you put out the welcome mat. They love to torture people who welcome them.
Spiritism Condemned by God
Some people get in touch with the demons directly or through a human medium. This is called spiritism. Voodoo, witchcraft, magic, fortune-telling, and inquiring of the dead are all forms of spiritism.
The Bible condemns these things, saying: “There should not be found in you anyone . . . who employs divination, a practicer of magic or anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer, or one who binds others with a spell or anyone who consults a spirit medium or a professional foreteller of events or anyone who inquires of the dead. For everybody doing these things is something detestable to Jehovah.”—Deuteronomy 18:10-12.
Why does Jehovah warn us so strongly against these practices?
For our own welfare, Jehovah warns us against all forms of spiritism. He loves and cares for people, and he knows that those who get involved with demons are bound to suffer.
One such person was Nilda, who was a spirit medium in Brazil. The demons made her life a misery. She relates: “The spirits . . . possessed me, ordering me about. I alternated between states of consciousness and unconsciousness, and I was interned with psychiatric problems. The demons persecuted me so much that my nerves were affected. I took sedatives and began to drink and smoke constantly. This went on for years.”
In time, with the help of Jehovah and his Witnesses on earth, Nilda broke free of demon influence and now lives a rich, wholesome life. She says: “I encourage all never, not for one instant, to become involved with the [wicked] spirits.”
