I would like to repaint with some brighter colors but I am afraid that this will make my kitchen look even smaller. Any ideas what to paint that would brighten and not look smaller..I was thinking maybe two different colors? Interior designer I am not.

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think an orange like "serape" (# 6656) and "humble gold" (# 6380) might be a great choice.
You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
If your kitchen has chair rail molding on the walls then I think 2 colors would be a great idea. If you put the darker one on the bottom the lighter will make the room look brighter and the ceiling taller.
you may paint your island a lighter shade, and loosen up the countertops. i might propose you upload a superb accessory shade to the backsplash and use the colour in the front room as pillows and accessory products. make constructive the draperies are mild and ethereal with purely an consumer-friendly development. positioned lighter shade stripe fabrics pads in the eating chairs, and it rather is particularly useful to paint the hutch and sidebar. There are some superb paints on the marketplace for such projects. you would be unable to flow incorrect with some colourful artwork and rugs. basically undergo in concepts do not upload too many diverse colorations. Paint can rework a depressing, boring room.
lighter color will open up the area - darker colors will close it up - but don't be afraid of color - you can do say the wall area under your cabinets above your counter tops a brighter color and do the other walls a warmer color. what colors do you like?
Try a shade slightly different than the blue you already have, that should make it look larger. Paint them a lighter blue. It would be very pretty.
