Jack, as captain of the Black Pearl, was planning to take the treasure (not realizing it was cursed). On the way, his crew, led by Barbossa, mutinied against Jack, took the Black Pearl and his directions to the treasure, and left Jack stranded on an island. When Barbossa and the crew took the treasure they became cursed, but not Jack since he didn't take any of the treasure. (Near end of movie, however, Jack takes one piece of the treasure and thus becomes cursed, which is why when Barbossa runs him through with his sword, Jack becomes a 'skeleton').
