"Add these fractions. Reduce all answers to lowest terms"
2/3
1/12
+ 4 1/4
----------
I dunno how to break down fractions that already have a Number next to them... like the 4 1/4 and the 1 / 12
I already finished this book a year ago...but i need to be refreshed of how i did the problem?
Update:do the problem if you can xD

you need to find a common denominator - which is going to be 12
so 2/3 will be 8/12 (multiply top and bottom of 2/3 by 4)
1/12 will stay 1/12 (because it already has a 12 in the denominator)
change 4 and 1/4 to an improper fraction (you dont want to leave it as a mixed fraction, so multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator, put that answer over the denominator) - 17/4 and then get a common denominator - 51/12 (multiply 17/4 by 3 on top and bottom)
then you add 8/12 + 1/12 + 51/12 = 60/12 which is equal to 5
Turn the 4 1/4 into an improper fraction by multiplying the denominator (the bottom number of the fraction, the 4) by the whole number (the 4 on the left) and add the numerator (the 1 on the top). Put this new number over the original denominator, 4.
4 1/4 becomes (4*4+1)/4 or 17/4.
Substitute that back in:
2/3 + 1/12 + 17/4
Now you need to change all the denominators to be alike in order to add them. The denominators we have are 3, 12, and 4. We can change each of these fractions to have a 12 in the denominator rather easily.
Remember how if you multiply a number by 1, the number doesn't change? Well that's essentially what we're doing. For the first fraction, 2/3, we need to multiply the denominator by 4 in order to get a 12 down there. But we must also multiply the top by 4.
The 4/4 is equal to 1, so we're not changing the value at all:
(2/3) * (4/4)
8/12
The 1/12 term already has a denominator of 12 so we don't need to do anything with it at the moment.
Next we need to change the last term's denominator to 12. 4 is multiplied by 3 to get 12 but we must also multiply the numerator by 3 as well.
17/4 * 3/3
51/12
Now we can add them.
8/12 + 1/12 + 51/12
Since the denominators are the same, we can ignore those for the time being and just add the numerators.
8+1+51
9+51
60
Now take the sum of the numerators and put it over the common denominator, 12.
60/12.
Simplify.
5.
Hope it helps.
first of all: 4 1/4 the four in front of the 1/4 are already 4 times 4/4. So you can take the 4 times the 4 in 1/4 and then add the 1 from 1/4
So that means 4 1/4 is the same then 17/4.
Then you need to find for all of the three fractions the same denominator.
So and you know that 4 is in 12 and 3 is in 12 too. So the same denominator will be 12.
2/3x4/4= 8/12
1/12=1/12
17/4x3/3=51/12
Now add all together: 8/12+1/12+51/12= 8+1+51/12=60/12
The lowest term of 60/12= 30/6=10/2=5/1=5
Hope you did understand
You can find the lowest term when you figure out which number can you divide threw both numbers, so in 60/12 it is 2, in 30/6 it is 3 and in 10/2 it is 2.
8/12 + 1/12 + 4 3/12 = 4 12/12 = 5.
Simple, just ignore the whole numbers for now (ie '4')
Now multiply the fractions so that the numbers on the left are the same (biggest fraction is 12th)
2/3 changes to 8/12 (multiplied by 4)
1/12 doesn't need to change
1/4 changes to 3/12 (muliply by 3)
add numbers on top (or left of fraction) to get 12/12 (8+1+3)
first answer is 12/12 (without the whole number)
12/12 = 1 whole number (same on both sides, obviously)
add with the whole number(s) = 4 + 1 (the 12/12 thing)
answer is 5!
Always seperate whole numbers from fractions when you can...just simplifies things!
EDIT: Managed to make a mistake before so hopefully managed to get it right (should be easy, but my poor ol' brain)
the answer is 5. 2/3*4/4 + 1/12 + [(4*4)+1]/4
8/12 + 1/12 + 17/4
8/12 + 1/12 +(17 *3)/(4 *3)
8/12 + 1/12 + 51/12
60/12
5
2/3 * 4 = 8/12
1/12 *1 = 1/12
(4*4+1)/4 = 17/4 * 3 = 51/12
(8 + 1 + 51)/12 =60/12 = 30/6 = 15/3 = 5
enable's say she had 18 hours. On Friday, she did a million/3 (6 hours). So she had 12 hours left. On Saturday, she did a million/6 of something (2 hours). So in total she had finished 8 out of 18. So she has 10 out of 18 left ... it fairly is C (5/9). you could desire to get each and every thing to a elementary denominator. Friday = a million/3 Saturday = a million/6 of the relax 2/3 = 2/18 Convert Friday a million/3 into 18ths = 6/18. So in total she's finished 8/18. So there are 10/18 left to do ... it fairly is 5/9.
Find a common denominator whic is 12
2/3 = 8/12
1/12 = 1/12
4 1/4 = 4 3/12
8/12
1/12
4 3/12
4 12/12 = 5
