I've heard people say that some Italians try to "pass for white" b/c of their skin color or "try to act white"...
Well, I thought Italians were a Southern European ethnic group...aren't they white?
And how, supposedly, do "Italians act?"

Well, I'm from an area were almost everyone is at least part Italian, so it's different here than other places I guess.
But when people think of Italians they ususally think of Italians with dark skin (which the majority of them do have), thus not looking "white." Italians of mostly northern Italian descent , though, can be extremely pale like other Europeans.
Italians are now technically considered "white" because they're europeans, even though the term "white" originally only applied to WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, or the English) in America.
So, it's pretty much a just a left over prejudice from when the Italians were first immigrating to America, I think. Though I could be wrong.
Oh, and Italians are supposed to act like Tony Soprano, or whatever his name is. The sad part is some of them actually do act like that, and on purpose. I doubt anyone acts like that naturally.
Italians act like everyone else, human beings. Anyway Italians do fall under the "caucasian" definition which means that they are non-semitic whites. If you are referring to skin color and not race, Southern Italians tend to be darker than the Italians from the middle and north regions of the country due to the climate of the areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.
And as for "acting white," there is no such thing as acting like a race because that notion suggests that every person from a certain group is exactly alike, which is not true.
And as for "passing for white," some Italians identify as white while others don't, or they just prefer to be identified as Italian.
Italians are considered white so YES they are white. Now, there are exceptions because in southern Italy many of them are very dark skinned but not all of them. Northern Italians are generally very light and look just as white as any normal white person from Europe.
As a generalization, Italians are very loud and sociable. They love to eat well and the men tend to me momma's boys.
Are you asking this question because the only time you've seen Italians is when you're watching "The Godfather" or "The Sopranos"?
If you want to really know about Italians, their customs, and their culture, you can check the internet or visit your local library and easily obtain this information.
It also doesn't hurt to save up some $$ and visit Italy yourself. I've been there and it's a BEAUTIFUL country!
**EDIT**
I have to disagree with whoever said that Italians don't like Black people. Some of them don't, of course, because every race has its "bad apples".
But when I was in Italy, the men were treating me like I was a supermodel!
Look up Hanibal the legendary African general and it will tell you why some are a little skeptical when it comes to....Italians being white.
Every body has an act...the whole world is a stage for the rich...race is a big contributor to the deterioration of our species.
Looking at old questions. I m part Italian nut I am as Caucasian as can be
How do Italians act? Well, Sylvester Stallone is Italian. So using him as my gage, I would have to say that Italians are below average actors.
Italians are white and you can definately point them out against other Europeans by their European facial features but dark coloring.

I believe they act like human beings. But hey, that's just me. I could be way off....
I just noticed I have almost the same answer as the first guy. What can i say? Great minds think alike.
Do you mean culturally?
