has anyone done a dessert only buffet for their wedding? how did it go and what did you have?
we're on a budget and getting married around 9 or 10 o'clock at night. I thought that a dessert buffet with wine and champagne would save $ and be delicious!!
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! It`s very creative, AND the sugar&excitement will keep the guests up and pumping! This is a great idea, however I would suggest something mild, and not-so-sweet, such as soup may be, or hot french bread with butter, so that the guest wont feel so bloated. Water (warm and cold) would be totally appriciated and hot cocao with marshmallows would be quite a treat! Good Luck and congratulations!
However, I would also tell the guests in advance that this is your plan, incase they were expecting dinner.
That sounds like a nice idea, it isn't around meal times so they should be able to eat before. Just say on the invitations that it will be a dessert reception.
I have not been to a wedding with a dessert reception, but as a guest I would want a variety of options. It probably will not be that hard finding the sweets that you like. I would assume you will have a wedding cake, it doesn't need to be fancy but you probably will want some sort of cake.
Some people do not like sweets that much, so I would definitely recommend having some fresh fruit, even if it doesn't always hold up perfectly. Go simple with a basic fruit salad or mix it up with some tropical fruit. You could have whipped cream or things to dip it in if you want.
Cookies can be made quite elegant and would be easy to eat. Get a variety with milder sugar cookies, choloately ones, and maybe some with jams or something similar.
Avoid things that need refrigeration, like cheesecake. They are popular, but they are messy and people may be trying to much while they mingle.
Make sure you have more than champagne available too. Many people like to have coffee, tea, or milk with desserts. Make sure you also have water available.
I would LOVE to go to a wedding/reception like that!! I have given the idea of a dessert only reception to many couples on a budget.
Personally, I think 9 or 10 p.m. (for the ceremony) is awful late. Why not 8 p.m. or 8:30 p.m.? I wouldn't have it any later than that. By then everyone will have eaten dinner and will have time to get to your wedding.
Suggestion: I would also have some fruit and possibly some assorted cheeses and crackers (for those who do not like sweets). You might also consider some de-caff coffee.
Suggestion #2: Make sure that you indicate on your reception card what type of reception you are having, so that everyone is clear.
I did it! it was wonderful. We warned people on the invitations. We said "Desserts will be served" So people new to not expect a meal.
Anyways, we had different kinds of cheesecakes, white and dark chocolate fountains with a lot of fruit and cookies to dip and then we had a candy buffet with baggies so people could take the candy home. Oh, and we still had a wedding cake.
It was a huge hit! Specially the candy buffet. people loved it and we only did brown and white (our wedding colors) so it looked really great.
It was such a hit that another couple who got married one month after us did the same thing!
I recommend it! Saves a lot of money and still looks classy.
I will be doing a "cake and punch" myself, but I recently attended a 7:30pm wedding with a dessert buffet. They had a (small) traditional wedding cake, and a plethora of goodies. They borrowed a chocolate fondue fountain, served with pretzels, fresh strawberries, cookies and a few other items great for dipping in chocolate. They also had another table which had the small fancy cookies and pastries they purchased in bulk from Costco and Smart and final. For approx. $500 one of the parents hired a coffee bar which was a huge hit! Free coffee drinks could not have been more perfect with the dessert. They only served water, and one punch variety, but used sparkling cider for their toast. If you can't afford champagne, you could always do a white grape juice/ginger ale punch to save a lot.
Several of my cousins have done dessert only buffets. For 9 or 10 pm I think that is fine. If it was earlier in the evening, I would suggest a dinner or salad buffet, but yours is so late I think people will be smart enough to eat a light dinner, and that is dessert time anyways.
My friend had a dessert only buffet. The desserts were very nice and it was great to have the selection. Although, I have to say, I was very disappointed to not get wedding cake, i love wedding cake!
I did dessert only. At the time it was considered a "cake and punch" reception, but it is the same general idea. It went great for us, and it did save a ton of money.

If you have any Diabetic guests consider some sugar-free desserts as well, they'll be so happy you thought of them!
(PS I think a Dessert buffet is a great idea, I wanted to do it too but it got vetoed by my mom and future MIL)
