I'm not suggesting that it will go off soon but am just curious what the immediate effects of the explosion would be. I've heard rumors that the blast would be powerful and travel faster than the speed of sound.....
Update:I'd like to know immediate effects. Its pretty common knowledge it would cause a nice little ice age but I just want to know if I'd even be around to go through it :)

you'd be better off to go out in the blast. the ash could will kill millions of people, never mind the ice age. ash is a silica substance. when breathed into the lungs its a slow agonizing death, basically from your lungs filling with shards of glass.
Must of this is speculation and has no basis in history. The magnetic structure of the earth has exhibited over time, many strange characteristics, including completely disappearing, flipping polarity, and splitting into two or more parts. In many cases, there is no correlation between solar "storms" and the activity of the structure. Yes, solar flares (storms) can disrupt and even destroy unhardened electronic devices. But for the most part, this is nothing more than an eleven-year cycle, something the earth has gone through uncounted times before.
Pretty much kiss everything in that area goodbye. So long. Crispy critters.
New Ice Age thanks to the smog covering the Earth's atmosphere, thus blocking the sun.
