I agree that if others are wrongly critical of a person, then that person shouldn't care what others think. For example, many kids are bullied and they try everything to be accepted by their peers when the problem was with their peers in the first place, not with they themselves. In cases like that, caring what people think is not beneficial.
However, there are instances when caring what people think can be insightful. For example, a mother could allow her eight-year-old daughter to wear makeup, short skirts, high heels, and tight clothing. She would do well to listen to others when they tell her that she is dressing her daughter inappropriately. Another example is when people constantly tell someone that they have a bad temper. That person should listen to their warnings before his temper makes him do something serious. Or if a woman was dating a drug addict and/or seller who is in a gang, she should listen when people tell her to leave him alone.
So when the motivation for what people think about us is sincere, we should hear them out and see if it is true and applies to us. It won't always apply and may just be that person's opinion, but I'd rather hear what turns out to be inapplicable counsel than wonder why no one told me about something bad I was doing.
