Why do so many of the best bands/musicians have drug issues?

It's incredible isn't it. All the truly gifted musical artists had drug problems. Elvis, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublilme, Nirvana, Steevie Ray Vaughan, Clapton, Pink Floyd, Alice In Chains, Van Halen I mean jesus why can't it be enough to play guitar and write songs. Meanwhile there's like a bajillion straight edge bands and christian singers who never touch anything and noone's heard of them. Most of them (but not all of them) really suck, even for their genres. It might seem normal just because that's how it is, but seriously why must musical talent and not just drug use but serious drug addiction go hand in hand?

Just like drcoca said... they can afford it. People that have that kind of money, power, and fame feel like nothing can hurt them (especially when they are young). How do you know the straight edge bands and christian singers never touch anything? Maybe they just don't admit it. The preacher's kids are always the wild ones with the real problems, and I say this from experience with only one personally confirmed exception. Most people just don't know about it.

not plain and simple. some drugs help create music and get completely into a song. they open up your eyes. its a slippery slope though, and its not a coincidence that the greatest bands and musicians died from the use. In my opinion, if there was a 20% chance of death, I would take those odds to play their hearts and minds out to 1000s of people, change the world, have unlimited money and any woman you chose. Drugs with music = beauty, drugs without music = addiction and misunderstanding

With people like Blondie, The Beatle and Hendrix.......if they hadn't taken drugs there music wouldn't have been the same.

Some songs were written while high on weed, coke and LSD.

So, seems that drugs can make you more creative (see The Beatles - I am The Walrus, lol)
