Rounding and Round-off Error?

In everyday life, we are most likely to round time. Use the following: 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 minute = 60 seconds.

1.Consider a time like 10 hours, 32 minutes, 15 seconds.

a)Round this time to the nearest minute.

b)Round this time to the nearest ten minute.

c)Round this time to the nearest hour.

2.A train is scheduled to arrive at 10:30. It actually arrives at 10:32.

a)Did the train arrive at the time advertised? Explain why or why not. Your answer must be based on what we mean when we give a value like 10:30.

b)The fine print on the schedule says that a train is considered "on time" if it arrives within 5 minutes of its scheduled arrival time. Is this consistent with giving a scheduled arrival time of 10:30? Explain why or why not. Your answer must be based on what we mean when we give a value like 10:30.

3.At one point, service installers and repairmen gave you an "estimated time of arrival" (ETA). This corresponds to the rounded value of the actual arrival time.

a)The cable installer gives you an ETA of 11 AM. What time interval are they promising to arrive within?

b)Nowadays you are given an "arrival time window" (usually a four hour interval). Suppose you are given an arrival time window of "between 12 noon and 4 PM." Translate this into an ETA with an error value. (In other words: a statement that gives the ETA, "plus or minus" a time amount. For example, "6 PM, plus or minus 5 hours" corresponds to "between 6 - 5 = 1 PM and 6 + 5 = 11 PM")

4.In everyday life and timekeeping, we often round to the nearest fifteen minutes (so we talk about 7:15, 9:30, 4:45, and 6:00)

a)Round 7:12 to the nearest quarter hour.

b)Round 6:54 to the nearest quarter hour.

c)A friend says to meet them at a restaurant at "about 8:15." You arrive at 8:22. Are you there "about 8:15"? Explain why or why not. Your answer must be based on what we mean when we give a value like "about 8:15"
