There have been a number of suggestions to ease gas prices.
I've heard let's knock off Federal tax on gas for the summer. Sounds great doesn't it. But if we can do without the gas tax for the summer why do we need it at all?
I've heard let's knock of the Federal tax on gas at the pump and make oil companies pay it instead. Now to me this doesn't make any sense at all. You tax the oil company (or any company for that matter) and all they are going to do is tack that expense on to the cost of the item. And YOU end up paying the tax anyway. It just goes through the oil company to get to the government.
And even the most powerful person on this planet --The President, can't say no tax on gas through the summer without the consent of both houses or Congress. And at the rate they work if they started the approval process for the President's suggestion. By the time they got it done Santa Claus would be coming to town and summer would be long gone.
Is this pandering?

Of course it is. The scariest thing is that such a huge sector of the American public believes this is a good idea, and doesn't care what problems it might bring.
It's already been said that Congress would never pass it, and Clinton knows that. She is pandoring to the less educated voters that have no clue how this would affect the economy as a whole. Isn't it a shame? Some people just don't care, they see the idea of getting money and are in a rush to approve it without taking a look at the big picture.
Do people NOT care that even stopping the gas tax would cut money from the road and highway contruction projects we need to keep our country mobile? I guess not. They don't realize that the oil companies will laugh, then pass that cost right back to us.
Fed gas tax pays for roads and highways
and provides many jobs that go with that
If the tax goes and prices drop 18 cents, there will be an uptick in demand, and that would justify oil compainies to raise the price again, so it is a zero sum game
Hil said we should cut the gas tax, and make the Oil companies pay it with increased taxes on their top profits over a set point,....but that would require congressional approval.........and lord knows nothing is going through congress until the new president is in office
they are all false promises and misguided pandering, and people are falling for it
Don’t like the ‘Gas Tax Holiday?” Don’t cash your Stimulus Rebate Checks.
IT IS SO FUNNY TO HEAR PEOPLE say they don’t want the tax holiday and continue to defend Obama in his position that it’s a gimmick
SO FUNNY, as if these Obama supporters are:
1. rich
2. get money directly from oil companies
3. they are happy to pay $4 gallon +++
It’s amazing!!! You take any tax break you get. PERIOD.
If the oil companies raise the prices after the tax break is in place, then you will see a sheer price manipulation by them and can go after them a lot more easily than having to prove price manipulation.
Clinton plans to pay for it with a Windfall Tax on profits by the oil companies. This is the correct thing to do when they posted record profits.
I’m sure you dont mind George Bush’s Stimulus Check right??? —- as much as you hate Bush, you take his $300-$600 right???? I’m sure you couldn’t cash that check any faster even knowing that it wont solve the national debt issue.
Of course, you took Bush’s Stimulus Check right away without question because:
1. You need it
2. Your not rich.
etc.
Clinton message is that this move is a way to START the fight vs oil companies, its not the end solution. It is a fight that needs to happen but OPEC and the Oil Companies paid off every politician to shut up.
We need a fighter that will fight the oil companies and the BS public relations spin they put on things. Obama wants to do a camp fire and discuss things with the oil companies. As an empty suit, he fits their mold. They will buy him quicker than 1 gallon is used up by your truck. Obama gets paid by the oil companies and here you have, his supporters talk about the gas tax holiday as not good for us americans or our national debt.
Not passing this, you will continue to give the oil companies a free pass over the summer, over the year and the rest of the decade. I’m sure you take every tax break you can when you file your taxes or you cash your rebate check even though you know it won’t reduce the national debt.
You take it because you need it.
You are in debt personally, you need the help.
In the end, you need someone that will fight against the oil companies for price manipulation atop of this Gas Tax break, Hillary will. She is not going to stop after this tax break. Obama wants to see how much they will pay him first before making any decisions. It’s the Kilpatrick notion of leadership if you ask me.
In the end, its very simple…If you don’t want the Gas Tax break, DO NOT cash your stimulus check from Bush Jr. as well. It only makes sense, right?
Yes, sad to say, it is ALL pandering in one way or another. All's our Politicians need to do is reneg their moratorium on drilling on our own lands and seabeds, use the coal to oil, and build and update refineries so that we in this country do not have to depend on foreign oil. Furthermore, it will give this country a "break" UNTIL a more viable, cost/effective alternative fuel is readily available to the public. I ask WHY ARE NOT THE POLITICIANS LOOKING OUT FOR iTS OWN CITIZENSHIP!!!!!
In its purest, unadulterated form.
Obama for America.
And for the record to the guy below me....Bush can keep his stimulus package. I need it, but I believe in the greater good of all Americans, not just a quick fix for myself.
Anyone who cannot see this as pandering is pretty gullible and naive. Oops, just insulted the majority of Americans, sorry Bubba...........
Maybe Obama could buy us all a horse and buggy to get around in.
No, that's misinformation from the latest Obama commercial.
You said it, then you know it. Exactly
