One thing - do some research on how far cats can wander - you would be amazed at how far from home you cat may actually go on a regular basis - he could wander miles away from home - especially if he was not fixed and went in search of a female.
In case he does return to your home while you are asleep you could also rent or borrow a "have a heart" trap - this is a devise that you can use to trap cats or other wild animals while not hurting them. Contact your local animal control to see if they have one you could rent - they would also be able to provide instruction on how to use it.
Unfortunately as many have said - outdoor cats do face a large number of dangers - things you wouldn't even think of like anti-freeze poisoning.
Best of luck - I hope you find your kitty.
You should walk around your neighborhood and call him. Put up flyers, call your local shelter, and look under "lost/found" in your local craigslist page. I would not recommend a 10 month old kitty to be outside, but otherwise Don't listen to other people who say cats shouldnt go outside, it's completely natural and healthy for them (assuming you don't live near a busy street, and assuming the cat is old enough), but we must be responsible and make sure they're neutered so that they don't wander as much. Unfortunately though, if you do live near a street young cats very commonly get hit by cars.
Likely someone picked him up, took him to a shelter or he fell prey to a larger predator. When you allow your cat outside unsupervised, things like this happen all the the time. Had you built him an enclosure to go outside and sit or trained to a harness/leash he would still be with you.
Make some flyers and post around the neighborhood and slip one at the front door with all neighbors. With photo and phone number. Spread the word.
Good luck
I'll have you know cats thrive for the wild the worst thing you could possibly do is keep at cat inside when they are made for the wild. They are not domestic like dogs don't get me wrong I love him being inside but he sits at the back door to go out, so thanks.
Cats should not go outside. They are perfectly happy and healthy remaining inside where they are safe and can't be injured or stolen...or killed.
