5 month old kitten in heat ;(?

I adopted 2 kittens (brother and sister) from a rescue organization about a month ago they are 5 months now. I have an apt in 3 weeks to have them spayed and neutered my Vet wanted to wait till they were 6 months old. I also have a 5 1/2 year old neutered male tabby and 2 fixed male dogs. Problem, the little girl went into heat 2 days ago. I have never experienced this and I am a little upset. I have been keeping her in a spare bedroom when I can't be around as she is upsetting the other "boys" even the dogs (weird). My older male cat actually seems angry at her when she comes around and her brother.... just licks her and (fingers crossed) has not been all that interested. My Vet can't fit me in any earlier so I am left with this situation. I have questions

1) after her heat cycle passes will she return to (normal) and will my other cat play with her again?

2) I have a clean house and I have read that cats male and female will spray when a female is in heat....how would I know if this is happening..before i smell it? do you see it?

3) I feel horrible that she has to experience this...is there anything that I can do to help her?

Nothing you can do to help her but keep her separated from the rest so they don't breed - she is capable of breeding and if one of the males ends up getting her pregnant she is likely to die if you don't terminate the pregnancy immediately.

I would NOT let her around the boys even if you think she is out of heat - cats can still breed and get pregnant when NOT in heat if the male is determined enough.

Everyone will get along after all are neutered/spayed and healed up. You should be ok regarding the spraying - most times only a tom that has bred a lot before is likely to spray.

I don't know why your vet wouldn't spay earlier than that. There was an old theory that earlier spaying led to developing "cancer" due to a limited study by an idiot vet on Oriental short-hairs which are prone to getting Cancer anyway. However, it is now believed that spaying earlier can actually REDUCE the risks of kitties getting mammary cancer and such. Most vets will have a age limit (usually 12 weeks) or 2lb.s Whichever comes first. Some exceptions might be an older kitten who has very low body weight or is just tiny (because of complications due to anesthesia, no one wants to run the risk of having a kitten crash on the table) OR if there is a known or suspected heart condition. If your cat is not in any of these risk categories, perhaps you ought to look for another vet. Keep in mind you will probably want to keep her isolated anyway, until she is out of heat. While spaying can be done while a kitten/cat is in heat it is more complicated and a little more expensive.

She will return to normal after her hormones have leveled out...but granted she is probably not in a STRONG heat anyway, but just a "kitten" heat. It is irritating nonetheless for other cats an animals in the house. I have an 8 month old kitten, a friend has her sister and they sound like they are gargling marbles and yodeling when they go into heat (I am a breeder so they will NOT be spayed). Any and every pet SHOULD be spayed/neutered.

Spraying can NOT be predicted. Everything is fine one minute...and then the next your house smells like a goat farm. Best bet ...HAVE THE BOYS NEUTERED immediately. It takes longer for their hormones to settle out and an irritated boy can make a stinky MESS out of your house.

If she is real in warmth please hold her indoor handiest. If she is set free she could appeal to a mate and turn out to be pregnant. Situated on how affectionate she is appearing she may be in warmth. Other signs that she is include consistent meowing and vocalizations and she may also spray a form of liquid onto walls, furnishings, and so on. 5 months, whilst not excellent, just isn't too young to have her spayed.
